Restoring Local Democracy in Michigan

NMAP teamed up with the Advancement Project and local organizing group, Michigan Forward, to challenge Michigan’s Public Act 4, which gave state-appointed “Emergency Managers” almost complete control over local governments, allowing them to dissolve existing democratically elected governments, sell off a city’s assets, control the academic/educational plans for school districts, and more. These Emergency Managers were used almost exclusively in municipalities with large African American populations. Our video showed the human impact of unaccountable government in these towns, and helped our local partners win a referendum repealing the law.
